Good morning and Happy Monday, you sexy bitches! This weekend, in addition to doing a CRAZY amount of writing (more about that later), I also finished what ended up being a week-long binge watch of the TV series Heroes. It was my first time watching the series despite having owned the first two seasons on DVD for over two years. I got them at a charity media sale, but hadn’t gotten around to watching them. Last weekend, I decided to give it a go, and by episode three or four, I was hooked. I’ve been watching episodes every night, and this weekend, neither of my kids were home, so I did nothing but write and watch Heroes for two days straight.
It. Was. Awesome.
Well, I am done. As soon as I finished, I opened my laptop and started typing so it would all still be very fresh. There were some characters I loved. There were some I hated. There were even some characters I hated, and then loved. We’re going to talk about all of them, plus my thoughts on the show as a whole. 🙂
Heroes was much different than what I had pictured in my head. I honestly figured it would feel cheap. I imagined bad filming, bad acting, and bad special effects. I could not have been further from the truth on all counts. For the most part, the writing was tight. A little infuriating at times, but tight. Each episode was like a death march. Someone always frikkin dies, but the nice thing about Heroes is that doesn’t exactly mean much. They may be dead, but they also might be back in the next episode.
SYLAR / GABRIEL GREY
Sylar ranks as one of my top favorite villains of all time. This character is so unbelievably flawed, but it isn’t exactly his fault. I think his mom hugged him too much. Or not enough. I don’t know, but there was a problem with hugging, I’m sure of it.
He’s complex, and probably has the coolest power of anyone, with Peter’s power coming in a close second. Sylar’s ability to take the power of others once he understands how it works is something Sylar takes to a frightening level. We find out somewhere along the way that he could do it without hurting anyone. He just chooses to because he likes it.
He pulls off creepy in a way I’ve never seen before. There’s is something very charming about him. If you could get by the fact that he wants to cut your head open and tinker with your brain, he has potential to be a very intense boyfriend.
I imagine the sex is probably rather inventive. Although, the few times he gets pelvic in the show, it doesn’t go well for the lovely lady in the scene. Except for that time with Parkman’s wife. That was frikkin hot. (Sorry, Matt….)
Anyway! Moving on.
::::Note to Self::::
Stop romanticizing the serial killer. He’s a serial killer. Even if he does have great hair and happens to be the mother fucking KING of 5 o’clock shadow…..
Examples – King of 5 o’clock Shadow:
Ok, I’ll drop it now.
I had a couple of awesome moments during Heroes that made me realize I was totally destined to work on this show in another life. All of the moments were dialed-in around Sylar. This character and I were just totally made for each other. In one instance, I was watching season four and someone walked into my room. Sylar asked a question and I said out loud “because you’re a psychopath” and two second later, Claire answered, word-for-word “Because you’re a psychopath.” It was perfect! Another time it happened was with a soundtrack choice…
I was watching season two and got to the finale. The final scene. Sylar has been without his powers and he’s desperately trying to get them back. After injecting himself with a cocktail made to grant abilities, the switch flips in the character. Quinto’s face goes from the Sylar off his game back to the nut job who likes to get bloody. He says “I’m back”, and then I thought ‘they should totally have played a clip from Psycho Killer by The Talking Heads right there. It would have been PERFECT!!!’ But alas, it doesn’t, fades to black, and onto the next episode.
Click here to view the clip because YouTube is being stupid and wont let me embed it.
I tell Mel and Dubo all about my Psycho Killer revelation Friday night as I am trying my ASS OFF to convince them that they need to give Heroes a chance (this is what happens when I geek out over a film or TV show – you as my friend get dragged into my geeky obsession, too). I tell them all about this perfect moment and how they should have used the song. I hop onto NetFlix and play the moment for them and they totally agreed.
Fast forward to Saturday. No kids and plenty of writing to do, so I dig out my notebooks and hit play on Heroes. The first episode is one in season three. Sylar has taken a kid with him on his little mission to find his dad. He has the kid with him because the kid wont give up the address. They’re riding in the car and THIS FUCKING HAPPENS:
I CALLED THAT SHIT!!! See? I was meant to work on this show in another life time. Totally.
My only complaint about Sylar is he should not have been allowed to kiss Kristen Bell. Seriously. I don’t know if they didn’t like each other in real life, but there was no chemistry between them on screen. And you can’t blame the fact that Quinto is gay in real life, because when he and the chick from the carnival suck face, IT’S HOT. So that excuse doesn’t fly. They just didn’t have it.
Ok, one last glimpse before we move on.
He just got done killing someone just then….
Okay, I might be a little bit in love with him. Sigh.
HIRO NAKAMURA
OMG, I just wanted to hug Hiro all the time. He’s the first character we are really introduced to when the show starts, and he has the most blindly optimistic view of the world. He’s always got the greater good in mind and it’s endearing. I just wish you didn’t have to READ all of his scenes. Since I was writing while watching the show, any time Hiro was on the screen, I couldn’t glance away for even one second or I had to rewind and rewatch. This does not make multi-tasking easy, but I am sure they didn’t have writers in PJ’s in mind when they decided to make the show.
PETER PETRELLI
OMG, this guy is my other fictional boyfriend from the series. First, um, HOT. Second, he’s Peter Motha’ Effin’ Petrelli. This guy has the only power I feel comes even close to being as bad ass as Sylar’s. Sylar can collect others’ powers. Peter can borrow others’ powers. Where Sylar can stockpile all of them, Peter can only borrow one at a time. Whatever power he had when he touches you get replaced by your power. Not as cool as Sylar’s, but still very cool.
Peter is the epitome of the boy scout character. He’s all about doing good and has the nothing but stars in his eyes. He knows things are not good with the world, but he also genuinely believes he can use his abilities to make the world a better place.
My only hang up about the series is I wish we had gotten to know more about Future Peter with the scar across his face.
Everyone talked a lot about how over the top he was, but we never really got to see it. We got little hints, but they never fully showed us. It had to have been pretty bad for Claire to decide to kill him, but I wish we had seen more of it.
NATHAN PETRELLI
Nathan is a character that I only really started to like just about the time that he got his throat slashed. I could never nail down whether he wore a black hat or a white hat. Even though I had warmed up to him by the time he met his demise, I still didn’t fully trust him. He was too easily corruptible.
There are so many killer moments in this show. By killer moments, I mean the ones that make you ugly cry. lol For me, the biggest one was Peter’s goodbye with the non-Nathan, and then again at Nathan’s funeral. Both of those moments were really frikkin hard to witness. Worse than anything else on the whole show, in my opinion. Fucking writers….
MOHINDER SURESH
Hottest voice on the show. Lol That is all.
Just kidding. No, I loved his character. I kind of wish he had more screen time.
MATT PARKMAN
Matty Parkman! I paid almost zero attention to this character until he got Sylar stuck in his head. That’s when shit got interesting. Up until that point, I really couldn’t understand why this character was even on the show. He seemed boring by comparison to everyone else. However, he turned into a raging bad ass. He took on Sylar and won. Not something that many other characters can boast. When Sylar fought back and took over Matt’s body, the suicide by cop trick was frikkin genius.
Oh, and one more quick reminder:

NOAH BENNET / HRG
I had to look up what ‘HRG’ meant. When I was watching the show, I would see the descriptions mentioning HRG, I knew it meant Noah, I just didn’t at all catch onto what HRG meant. Then I Googled. HRG = Horn-Rimmed Glasses. Worst name ever. It would have made more sense to just refer to him as Agent Bennet or Noah. But HRG?? No one in the show refers to him as HRG! They do refer to him as “the guy with the horn-rimmed glasses” but they never actually CALL HIM HRG. Why would they try to force that ridiculous nickname on us? Stupid.
Anyway, he’s a great character, too. There are moments when you’re not sure whether or not he can be trusted. I would love to see him go full-on white hat. Have him start being the specials’ errand boy.
Have him wear a leather coat and lose those horrible glasses. I bet we could turn “HRG” into quite the bad ass.
CLAIRE BENNET
Claire has the top dog of abilities in one sense (she regenerates tissue so she’s virtually indestructible), but the worst ability in another sense (she can’t fucking do anything else!!!). You may not be able to hurt her, but you can sure as shit try because she doesn’t even seem to have the ability to use simple, mundane self-defense techniques. If I were her, I would be signing up for some martial arts training. Maybe a gun course. Something to make it so she can do more than just stand there and say “do you worst because you can’t hurt me.” That bit gets a touch old after a while.
Aside from that, Claire’s scenes probably made me cry worse than anyone else’s. Her story line is one of the toughest to watch, I think. She’s grown up with one family, just learned about another, and no matter which direction she runs, she has no clue who to trust. That’s a tough break. A kid should be able to turn to their parents and rely on their parents to protect them. A parent should never be the intentional cause of pain in a child’s life. For Claire, when she finds out what Noah does for a living, I can only imagine the disorientation that must cause, your life instantly turned off its axis. The character must just be so lost. It’s sad.
Overall, I liked her. She’s a solid character with the potential to be so much more.
ANDO MASAHASHI
Ando, Hiro’s sidekick. I adored him. I really don’t have much to say here. No complaints. He’s a sweetie.
NIKKI SANDERS / JESSICA / TRACY STRAUSS
I FUCKING LOVE ALI LARTER!!!!!!!!!! Larter has been a long time favorite actress of mine. I’ve been a hardcore fan since the remake of House on Haunted Hill. She’s gorgeous and she’s awesome and I just want to be her. And I went into this show having absolutely no clue she was in it. As you can probably tell, I didn’t do much research prior to watching this show (had no clue Zachary Quinto was in it, either).
Larter actually plays several characters on Heroes. I wont get into the complicated story of why, but, it’s a testament to her acting ability because these characters could not possibly be more different. And she OWNS every one of them. I just love her so much. lol
THE HEROES: REBORN TRAILER
For those who haven’t seen it yet, I wanted to post the trailer for Heroes:Reborn. I didn’t watch it until I was completely done with Heroes. So, here it is! Enjoy!
Overall, I loved the show and I am SURE I irritated the shit out of those around me for the last week obsessing over certain story lines. I am really sorry I didn’t watch this when it was airing, but, I am really glad I took the time to binge-watch through it. The ride was soooooo worth it.
In closing, all I have to say is this:
Dear Zachary Quinto,
Should you ever realize that you were somehow mistaken all these years and actually do like girls, I’ll be waiting. But you’ll have to be willing to allow me to address you as Sylar.
Sincerely,
Me
