And I quote, “I’m the fucking king!”

Bad Omens, bitch! These boys are my current musical obsession. I’ve yet to hear a single track by them that I don’t like. Some tracks make you want to scream along to vent the day’s frustrations. Other tracks are haunting and heartbreaking and will make you want to sob into a pillow while whispering to singer Noah Sebastian that it’s all going to be okay. Tonight’s spotlight on Bad Omens is the song Concrete Jungle.

I am loving the sudden resurgence of good metal music. There is a specific sound coming back. Bands with real lasting power. It’s like the emo metal bands all went back to the drawing board, got rid of some of the whining and replaced it with a healthy helping of anger. Bands like Bad Omens are what that result looks like. These guys write romance. You get swept away by the lyrics and atmosphere. Concrete Jungle has a more angry edge to it but it’s still loaded to the gills with emotion.

I had a friend named Marc with whom I shared a deep love of music. All music but especially good metal. He would have loved Bad Omens. Unfortunately, their debut album didn’t come out until a year after he was already lost to the opiate epidemic, but every time I listen to them, I cant help but imagine how much he would have loved their sound.

Bad Omens is officially on my must see list for the coming touring season. However, I am desperate to catch them in a smaller venue like the House of Blues in Boston (or Vegas!) or the Webster Theater in Hartford Connecticut. If I can catch them at a venue like that, I think I am going to see them solo. It feels a little dangerous to go alone but I want to completely immerse myself in their music without interruption. I can easily ignore three thousand strangers. I cant ignore three friends.

Who knows? I’ve met some cool strangers at shows like that. A gentleman who called himself Bacon once helped me and my friends stay out of a mosh pit at an epic Stone Sour show (when they were touring House of Gold and Bones….OMG!!!). He was like our metal spirit guide: there in a pinch to keep us safe and then we never saw him again… I love concert season.

Related to my writing, there is a line from this song that inspired an entire scene in the final Hellfire book. Obviously, I cant tell you what that is because we’re only three books into to the five-book series but I promise it’s going to be scorched earth kind of awesome. The day that we finally get there, I will remind you of this blog post and the significance. 📚✍

PLEASE NOTE: No Taylor Swift fans were harmed in the making of this Screamin’ Soundtrack blog post. Probably not the video either but I cant speak for the band. That being said, if you know a Taylor Swift fan, you are morally obligated to trick them into giving this video a listen. They need metal in their life. They can still be saved…

Lyrics

CONCRETE JUNGLE by Bad Omens

Can you see yourselfThrough the bruises when the makeup melts? In the dark when all the powers out?Everybody talks and gets aroundWhen the money talksDo you think it gets the point across? It’s a burning coal you’re walking onAnd in a second, all the pain is gone
I said it’s enoughI begged and I ran in circlesI climbed to the sunAnd fell in a concrete jungleI said it’s doneYou never know if you’ll get what you wish forI climbed to the sunAnd I fell, I fell in a concrete jungle
The coyotes cryAnd the sirens pass and harmonizeFires starting every day and nightBurn around us while we’re trapped insideWouldn’t it be niceTo play the game without a crooked dieIn a world where you don’t have to hide? You don’t have to live in a disguise
I said it’s enoughI begged and I ran in circlesI climbed to the sunAnd fell in a concrete jungleI said it’s doneYou never know if you’ll get what you wish forI climbed to the sunAnd I fell, I fell in a concrete jungle
And I’m the fucking king
I want things that money can’t buyThe price is pain to make this rightAnd I could buy a thousand livesSo you can try to kill me, but I can’t fucking die
Die
I said it’s enoughI begged and I ran in circlesI climbed to the sunAnd fell in a concrete jungleI said it’s doneYou never know if you’ll get what you wish forI climbed to the sunAnd I fell, I fell in a concrete jungle
In a concrete jungle
And I’m the fucking king
