Itty Bitty Review: From Scratch

Simultaneously Heartwarming & Miserable AF

Amahle “Amy” Wheeler, an American student studying in Italy, meets and falls in love with Lino, a Sicilian chef. When Lino faces health issues and the couple’s future is threatened, the two families come together.

Have you ever seen Marley & Me or Life of Pi??? This series feels a whole lot like that. It’s all sweet and soulmatey sweeping romance but you spend the entirety of the show sobbing. Holy shit, you guys. I mean it. The whole thing! Every time you think things are turning up, the Shitpile Fairy drops off a fresh delivery. It just snowballs and grows into this beautiful-but-devastating story line that takes five hundred and eighty-two thousand years to finally end. It’s such weighty content and you don’t get a whole lot of lighthearted moments to break it up. Eight episodes later, you cant breathe through your nose and you’ve single-handedly funded the Kleenex CEO’s bonus for the year.

Zoe Saldaña once again proves why she makes the big bucks. I’m a pretty cynical person and thanks to her acting ability, this series kicked my ass. She cries, I cry. She cries more, I up the ante and full on ugly cry. Omg, it wrecked me. Oh! And it’s based on a true story. I honestly don’t know if that makes the story more impressive or depressive. It might be a bit of both. You can read the actual story in From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home by Tembi Locke.

From Scratch is a beautiful and tragic series with a great cast. If you don’t mind uncontrollable crying jags, hit play. Just be sure to bring plenty of tissues and a vaporizer stick to clear your nose between episodes.
