I’ve almost reached my dark romance Goodreads Challenge goal of 100 books (as of this morning, I’m at 84 books). Once I reach my goal, I will be pivoting over to fantasy and paranormal romance to start working my way through my TBR on that side of the bookshelf (where I also have a Goodreads Challenge goal of 100 books).
In preparation for the genre jump, I started poking around for new paranormal romance authors to deep dive into. I specifically wanted to try something I’d never read before. I don’t usually do a lot of science fiction romance because, even though I read a metric shit ton of fantasy, for some reason my brain has a hard time painting a mental picture for me when reading sci fi. Not that I’m picking on SFR! I have this problem with all sorts of sci fi. However, I’m on such a hot streak with my reading commitments this year that I decided I would take a peek and give it a try. By some fluke, instead of the aliens I was fully expecting, the first thing I stumbled into was a selection of omegaverse novels.
If I’m being completely honest, I didn’t know what the f**k omegaverse was. I’ve asked on the interwebs before and never got a straight answer. Or, at least not one I understood. So I went to the omegaverse novel that looked most familiar to me to start. So here’s the thing: It’s a motifying concept. For those not familiar, omegaverse is a world in which humans act like wolves. There are packs with traditional hierarchies (alphas/betas/omegas), heats, mating, knotting, etc..
What I liked about the omegaverse novels I read is that even the super-serious thrillers have some comedy about them. Like, ladies going into heat at inopportune times always makes for a great big gigglefest but again, that would be absolutely mortifying. lol The Slate City Omegaverse by Devyn Sinclair was particularly funny. There are some moments in those three books that had me almost snorting out my morning coffee out my nose.
What I didn’t love is how common instalove is in omegaverse novels. Don’t get me wring! I’m not a total dumbass. I’m aware that the instalove is because of mating and instincts and hormones and yadda yadda yadda but I like my love stories to have some more back and forth and lots more tension. That’s not to say all omegaverse is instalove. The Alpha Ties series by Nora Ash is much more intense with lots of edge-of-your-seat action.

What I don’t like about both omegaverse and alien verse is the horrible over muscular male covers and it’s not just because I am queer. They are just bad
